Metal Folding FAQs

Metal Folding FAQs | Sheet Metal Folding & Bending Explained

At NemCon, we deliver expert metal folding and bending services to clients across the UK. Whether you’re new to specifying folded components or need tight-tolerance forming for large production runs, this FAQ page answers the most common queries about our CNC press brake capabilities, materials, tolerances, and turnaround.

Still unsure about something? Just contact our team for personalised advice — we’re here to help.

Metal Folding Basics

Q: What is metal folding or press brake bending?
A: Metal folding (also known as brake pressing) is the process of reshaping flat sheet metal into a specific angle or form using a CNC-controlled press brake. It allows for accurate bends in a range of materials without cracking or distortion.

Q: What’s the difference between folding and rolling?
A: Folding uses a straight punch and die to form angled bends. Rolling curves the sheet through cylinders to form round shapes. NemCon provides folding for angular components — ideal for enclosures, brackets, and structural profiles.

Capabilities & Materials

Q: What materials can you fold?
A: We fold a wide variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including:

  • Mild steel (0.5mm–10mm)

  • Stainless steel

  • Aluminium

  • Galvanised and zinc-coated sheet

  • Perforated and patterned metals

Q: What are your folding limits?
A: We can fold:

  • Up to 3 metres in length

  • Thicknesses from 0.5mm up to 10mm

  • Angles up to 135° depending on the tooling and material type

Q: Can you fold coated or painted metals?
A: Yes — but for best results, folding is usually completed prior to powder coating or finishing to avoid cracking. We can also fold film-protected sheet to prevent scratching.

Accuracy, Tolerance & Consistency

Q: How accurate is your folding process?
A: Our CNC press brakes deliver angle accuracy within ±1° and dimensional tolerances typically within ±0.3mm, depending on material and complexity.

Q: Can you do multiple bends on one part?
A: Absolutely. We can form multi-bend components, enclosures, trays, panels, and intricate bracket profiles — with consistent angles and repeatable accuracy across batches.

Q: Can I supply a sample or sketch instead of CAD?
A: Yes. We accept hand sketches, samples, DXF, DWG, and STEP files. Our team can convert your concept into a production-ready file and advise on best folding practices.

Lead Times & Delivery

Q: What’s your typical turnaround time?
A: Most folding jobs are completed within 2–5 working days, depending on material availability and order volume. Express turnaround is available on request.

Q: Do you deliver nationwide?
A: Yes — NemCon provides UK-wide delivery for all fabricated and folded parts, whether as standalone services or integrated with laser cutting and assembly.

Q: Can you offer folded parts as part of a complete fabrication job?
A: Yes. We specialise in cut, folded, and assembled metalwork, so you can get everything you need from one supplier — saving you time and coordination.
